Erika spends more time in this chair than I do. Can you blame her? Add some plush stuffed animals to the mix and it feels like you sitting in a marshmallow cloud.

Close Enough
Its close enough to Halloween to post some ghouls right? Michaels has already discounted their Halloween merchandise and they're pulling out the Christmas items. It makes one feel like October 31st is upon us. Here is how we spent Saturday night - making skeletons for the kids. Did our efforts result in hours of imaginitive play? No, within minutes Erika had pulled out her Mickey Mouse FunHouse and Christian was earning minikits on Star Wars Lego Wii. Want to make your own skeleton? Download the pattern here. http://images.marthastewart.com/images/content/web/pdfs/2008Q4/msl_1008_skeleton_invite.pdf

Lady-ana Jones
Last summer's hype surrounding the new Indiana Jones And The Endlessly Unsatisfying Story inspired Erika to dub herself "Lady-ana Jones." Yes, that was the nickname she invented entirely on her own. We showed a few scenes from the first Indiana movie and Erika fashioned herself a whip from a piece of braided rope and Christian assumed the role of "that guy who flashes the sword and gets shot."
Inspiration for Legos
A year ago, I purchased some tiny Japanese models of space ships. Bandai brand. The "Dark Nebula" pictured above is my favorite. Christian helped me put them together. They've been sitting in a box ever since. Then today I noticed that Christian's Lego creations resembled the models we built last year. No doubt that those models have influenced his aesthetics.

Let The Bidding Begin
Damien Hirst has nothing on our budding artist. Erika's pre-school teacher gushed about her ability to draw people while the rest of the class was still stuck in the abstract world. I enjoy her drawings but her "found art" is much more collectible. Her preferred medium is Cheerios. Cheerios stuck on anything. Shall I start the bidding at, say, 1 millllllion dollars?

The Kills with the Raconteurs
Heather gave me a hall pass tonight so I went to The Kills concert at SDSU Open Air with Scott L. Great set. I've seen Hotel and VV headline three times before and they were amazing. This time they opened for the Raconteurs. Enjoyed them but I was annoyed by the fans slowly filtering in for the Raconteurs. Short, tight 45 minute set. No encores. The Raconteurs were great too, another short set lasting just over 45 minutes. Their concert was much better than their albums (which I like too). My ears are still ringinginging. This shot is from The Kills concert at The Casbah several months ago. That's Scott S next to Hotel; Scott S takes credit for the photography.

Polaroid Land Camera
By far my favorite camera is the Polaroid Land Camera which I purchased on eBay. The entire set-up (camera, case, flash, and some other goodies) cost less than a 20 pack of peel-apart film. Its big, awkward, uses actual flash bulbs, and requires an odd battery only found on the Internet. Its sometimes temperamental behavior has left me with a collection of under and over exposed shots which I hope to combine in a collage someday. Polaroid has announced that it will stop producing film next year for this camera too. Fuji makes a color film that fits the land camera, but the b/w is the most fun. I wonder whether I should hoard some film. Out of date film for the Holgaroid, which is no longer produced, costs double what it used to on eBay.
X-Processing
Here's some cross-processing; Fuji slide film processed as print film. Taken with my Lomo. For more on x-processing go here.

Hand Cut
If you haven't had your children's silhouettes hand cut at Disneyland, then don't delay. Actually, we had ours done at Disneyworld. No matter; both parks have a shop for silhouettes. The woman at Disneyworld merely looked at our kids' profile and began cutting. Within 30 seconds we had a perfect profile of Christian and Erika. Here's a link to a story about silhouettes.
A Stab At Fine Art
By "fine art" I mean "using copying techniques I learned in Mr. Bates' fourth grade glass." I liked the composition of this photo and thought I could improve on it. You be the judge. The most difficult part was trying to find a scanner large enough to scan the painting. I had to remove the canvas from the frame and feed it through Kinko's largest scanner.
Lomography
Heather also bought me an Lomo LC-A when we were dating. Okay, so only 50% of the pictures from this Russian automatic camera ever turn out, but the risk is worth it. Developing Lomo photos is a gamble, sometimes you win, but usually you lose. Still, I prefer the imperfections and surprises of using chemically based media.
